The Adoption of Kailane Santos: A Thank You to Our Generous Readers

Kailane Santos in Brazil - Adoption Fundraiser
Kailane Santos: The beautiful little girl from Salvador, Brazil.

At the end of 2016, I sent out a fundraiser post regarding our friends, Taiala and Sonji Drakos, who are desperately scrambling to come up with the final $9,000 dollars needed to adopt their niece — an adorable little girl in Brazil named Kailane Santos. And you know what our readers did? They stepped up and helped out. I’m talking specifically about these folks:

Thank you again! You guys are awesome! (And If I’m forgetting anyone who donated through our blog, please let me know and I’ll add you to this list ASAP!)

Also, here’s a recent quote directly from Sonji and Taiala Drakos, thanking you all for your support:

We’d like to personally thank all of the OGM readers who generously contributed to Kailane’s adoption.

This has been a long, challenging but inspiring journey. The outpouring of support we have received during this final stage has helped enormously to ease the burden of trying to come up with the incredibly high fees associated with international adoption.

We are expecting the final approval from the U.S. Immigration office any day now and then we will have a few more weeks to come up with the remaining funds.

Just a few months ago we had no idea how we were going to pay the fees and now with all of your help we are so, so close!

You guys are awesome! Blessings to you all!

If you’re totally new to this fundraiser, great! Check out this video of Kailane. She’s just darling:

But the fundraising effort continues, as Taiala and Sonji Drakos are still short the final amount they need to finally bring Kailane home:

Not much left to go! We can totally do this!

Unfortunately, time is running out fast. See, Kailane’s story isn’t all cute and cuddly; her life down in Brazil is actually pretty freaking scary, and we need to get her out of there. Here’s a quote from Taiala Drakos about her niece’s current living situation:

Kailane Santos - Adoption Fundraising and Crowdsourcing
It’s down to me and you.

If you’ve been following our adoption story, you know about the extreme poverty in the suburb of Salvador, Brazil — where Kailane lives — but perhaps we haven’t thoroughly conveyed the immediate danger she’s in. Over the past year and a half, with the Brazilian economy in the midst of a recession, the neighborhood where she lives has become increasingly violent and abusive. Much of this violence and abuse is directed toward women and little girls. Without getting into specifics, she has had to deal with the threat of sexual predators in her neighborhood that the local police refuse to deal with. We’d like you to know this isn’t only about us wanting to adopt Kailane because of how much we love her and want to give her a better life. That is the truth…. but what is crucial right now is that she is living in an environment in which the majority of young women become caught up in a violent, repressive spiral of poverty and hopelessness. She needs our help now. If all you can afford to give is $5, then please give $5. Anything helps. I am not too proud to beg when it comes to my children.”

So please, if you can, throw a couple bucks at this fundraiser on YouCaring.com, I would be forever grateful, and Kailane’s life would be improved by orders of magnitude. (Also, if you indicate in your donation that you were directed from this blog — like by saying “OGM sent me” or something — I’ll add you to the list at the top of this post with a link to your own blog or the website of your choosing. And if you want to stay anonymous? That’s cool too. Just let me know.)

Click here to read the whole story and help Sonji and Taiala adopt Kailane. It takes about two clicks, and you can do it straight through Facebook. (Even just sharing the fundraiser link with your Facebook friends can raise $37 all by itself!)

Thank you everyone, and have an absolutely beautiful day!

  1. Thanks for giving us an update! I wanted to donate last time you posted about Kailane but life got in the way. I just donated now, and honestly seeing this story again was exactly what I needed today. I was feeling sorry for myself and this was the kick in the butt I needed to cut that out and remember that I am fortunate to have the stable, secure life that I do. All the best to Taiala, Sonji and Kailane!
